The Road to Maturity: From Greetings Cards to Adulthood!

Remember when we were kids, we used to exchange greetings cards wishing: Happy New Year. On the eve of every New Year, we would go card shopping buying dozens of cards for friends, cousins and other family members. On some occasions, we would even go on to creatively design cards using sketch pens and crayons! We would be even happier to receive a card or two addressed to us from friends and family.

Holidays were one of the most frenzy-filled reasons for excitement! Who doesn’t love holidays? And the thing about a feast with our families is even merrier. The soothing scent of the bonfire which brings a feeling of ecstasy during the winters and the aroma of the meals being cooked, fills the air of the 31st night.

New Years’ is one of the most celebrated times in human history. People of all ages get excited on the mention of the New Years’ eve and the subsequent parties that follow! But as we have grown up, haven't we seen quite a few things being altered over the years on this journey of the New Years’ eve? The innocence around the greetings cards along with the benevolence of spending quality times with families slid past us like ice. New Years’ Eve (NYE) parties nowadays revolves mostly around drinking divine alcoholic drinks, smoking sublime cigarettes and yeah, spending time in taverns and bars, where the light is too dim to even recognize your own face in the mirror!

So, how does the path that led us from greetings cards to the pubs seem like? Does growing up really mean we stop exchanging greetings cards amongst us and rather hold on to beer mugs? Shouldn’t there be any other signs of growing up other than holding an alcoholic beverage on your hand and breathing out a puff of smoke from your mouth (and nose occasionally!)? I am not saying this is a sign of non-prosperity but I have had to justify quite a number of times about being a non-drinker and a non-smoker! It sucks explaining fellow friends about my unusual obsession! I have never dismissed or judged anyone based on their drinking and smoking habits, so why should I be judged for not adhering to? Also, why should I have a legit reason for not complying to stack molecules of ethanol in my body and goofy and smoky gases in my lungs? Should there be a reason for everything? Why can’t some things just be?

Maturity has long been associated with one’s ability to get a hangover through these festive days. People should stop trying to prove their toughness and cockiness by complying with these customs in a hardcore manner. Alcoholism in a general way isn’t harmful but the way people indulge with it these days is a grave matter of concern. And I am not speaking about only one gender! There is a very specific reason why I brought about the topic of booze here. The 31st night incident in Bengaluru is one of the most unfortunate examples of this. The fact that the police failed to provide security to the ladies was unfortunate. But we as citizens have been totally failing to curb such matters for a long time now! It is not just Bengaluru and Delhi. If we open our eyes, every other city has the same scenario! Why are so many of such deplorable events taking place at such great pace? Why are matured men behaving like a mindless bunch of non-living beings? Where has the innocence that we once held upon in the form of exchanging greetings cards gone? Is there any benefit of being educated? Are we going to have to live with such stupidity around us forever? Is there absolutely no way around? And the worst part is, people are blaming the girls for all these! There is no limit to lunacy! And even if somebody is to be blamed, then the entire human history should be criticized for upbringing everyone in such manner!

On the 31st of December, 2016 everyone went wild celebrating the advent of another new year, like every other passing year. So, when we wish each other a ‘new’ year, can’t we make ourselves a pledge to make this year new and truly a different one from the earlier years? Celebration for the onset of a new year is fine but maintaining the freshness throughout the 365 days should be the real key. So, let us all make a promise amongst ourselves to subsequently reverse anything that comes in the way of human progress! Let us just not sit idle and instead, contribute for a change. After all, life is too short for any kind of regret. So, let us all just stand up for advancement and transition before time runs out!

Happy New Year, once again!

  1. Photographs were once taken to capture memories when we used to hangout, nowadays we hangout to click pictures. In the good old days, people used to smoke and drink to feel good and now drinking and smoking seems to be trend. The worst part about that does not involve the ones who is drinking, but it pretty much revolves around the one who don't. The "cool people" label them as the "not cool" people. And as far as the new year and other holidays are concerned, I think people should drink but only the volume they can handle, you don't wanna wake up the next day somewhere on the street don't you? Everybody has their own way of celebrating and we are no one to judge, as long as they are not affecting us. You believe in unicorns? Cool, but don't you dare tell me which color shoes to wear just because your unicorns will feel bad. :)
