India's Son: Can He be forgotten?

It was more than two years ago, when a girl in Delhi was raped by a group of men, and later died because of the excessive injuries caused by the heinous incident.
The gravity of the crime touched each and every soul of the country and every time such a crime takes place in the country, memories of that horrible incident on a that December night gets alive. Subsequently, laws have been made stricter. And prior to that incident, tighter rules have been implemented for women’s safety. Even a BBC produced documentary, titled ‘India’s Daughter’, which was sadly banned in India, was made on this very subject. No doubt, India’s daughters need to be protected and be safeguarded against, but it seems India has forgotten about their other children. India’s sons! And it looks like they need protection as well.

Evidences that humanity has been lost was seen when a man, accused of rape was dragged out of jail, beaten around naked on the streets and then, lost his life due to the public rage which followed. The public nowadays seems intolerant on such matters. It was the pictorial representation of the public’s mind that ‘enough is enough’. It was the evidence of a furor amongst the public that the Indian penal system is useless while dealing with criminals. It was the public outrage against a rape accused. And yet, the public went so wrong in dealing the entire scenario. During the course of events, an innocent life was lost. This is because reports now suggest that the woman wasn’t even raped. Instead it was she, who was demanding money from the man and when he refused, she accused him of rape. I don’t know the extent of the authenticity of this report but even then, the public was very much wrong in their action. No one has the right to take the law in their own hands. The Indian judicial system may be slow, but patience should actually be the virtue.

Reports also now claim that the man was earlier suspected to be an illegal Bangladeshi migrant and hence this kind of punishment was vented upon him. However truthful the claims were, still it doesn’t give anybody any rights to kill a man in such a fashion. Where has humanity lost within us? Even if he was a Bangladeshi national, it doesn’t justify his killing in any manner. Now, fresh reports also claim that his father and brother both served in the Indian army. Now, if this is true, then the incident is a big blot on India’s democracy!

Rapes on women by certain pathetic morons have given a bad name to the entire men community. Women certainly need to be protected from such crimes but on the other hand, situation has demanded similar laws to prevent men from wrongly accused and punished in the process. Loopholes in the laws have led to some serious situations recently, turning the public into a monster-army. And if the monster-filled public is not kept at bay, Indian citizens are in to face much more dangers on the road ahead. India’s sons and daughters both need to be kept safe. In today’s society, both of them are vulnerable to crime and injustice. With this new Government, this is another one of my enthusiastic expectation. And unless and until, the Government does something to modify the law, India is heading towards a dangerous path altogether.
