Book Review: The Rainbow Chaser

The Rainbow Chaser is a collection of emotions, heartbreaking experiences and affectionate stories which can be related by each and every person reading it. The writer, Jitendra Deka, involved actively in various literary actions and also a regularly contributor in various literary columns of English Dailies, has put together 16 stories ranging from various day to day topics and issues. The heart of every story has an essence connection to our beautiful state of Assam. Every story beautifully portrays a uniquely framed issue or a state of human mind which is wonderful to read.

Author: Jitendra Deka

The opening fable, The Rainbow Chaser delicately follows the dreams of a girl, who has endless fantasies involving life, after a shattering childhood which has broken her hopes of a pleasing life. In the next chapter, the focus shifts to 'The Watchmaker', which describes the life of an old watchmaker, who has seen times changing amidst his conventional watches and clocks, which ironically has been showing time without any fail irrespective of the fast innovations in the modern world. Here, the writer has successfully caressed the heart of the reader via the empathy of the watchmaker. One of the subsequent chapters 'Manikut', is one of the most powerful stories which the writer has chosen to convey through this book. It showcases the age-old customs which prohibits the female gender from entering certain religious institutions like The Barpeta Kirtan Ghar, which is finely depicted through the story of a girl, named Sukanya. The range of subjects within the book is quite diverse. Another story which deserves a mention is 'Subansiri' which gives a sneak peek onto the clashes between the Government and many local bodies via the story of an engineer Hariharan. In 'Ramadan', the present day scenario in private companies are depicted which so touchingly shows the absence of humanity in the corporate field. The romantic side of life is also being captured through the stories 'Sweetheart' and 'Memories of Loss'. A certain story by the name of 'Selection Day' conveys to us the deep rooted militancy problem of Assam while 'Horn' embraces the issue of rhino killing in Kaziranga National Park.

The Rainbow Chaser is a complete package of emotional attachment with beautifully crafted literature which promises to touch the soul of every reader. Throughout the exquisite journey of reading this book, a bookworm can feel the utmost emotions with which the writer has penned this phenomenal yet heart touching book! Kudos to Mr. Jitendra Deka for that.

Happy Reading!
