Why Happy New Year?

As new years come, old years go. This is a basic cycle of life. People celebrate. Families unite. Friends party. The whole country is in a jiggle of joy as another new year arrives, like last year and all other previous years.
The frizzles of the 31st night, the tastefulness feasts and the heartfelt greetings mire the whole winter festive season. One of the most important thing about the incoming new year is the hitler-style strict New Year resolution. Some resolve to shed their body kilos by consuming less food while others promise to waste less amount of bucks on random things. A few promise to study well to get good grades whilst a select few also wish to get into girls’ books. No fun intended, though. Well, for starters, resolutions are also taken to be broken.

But, the main concern is: Why do we call it a New Year altogether? What is the essence of it? Why do we wish each other? Is there any importance to it? What exactly will be so new to the year 2016 that people are getting all excited about? I do hope the year 2016 brings in a bagful of changes. Our country is already in need of various much-needed developments.

When you go out on the streets, do you not see hungry and starved-out beggars here and there mercilessly begging for some alms? Is there totally no solution at all to this problem? The New Year will be happy only if these people are taken care of by the government and given a well-to-do meaningful life.

In the streets, do you still not see people hopelessly and shamelessly breaking away traffic rules? Do you not see vehicles not withstanding to the three-colored traffic signals or a two-wheeler rider without a helmet? Do you not see some of the men in uniform accepting a little amount of cash to let the law-breaker free? Happy New Year only if you stop seeing these prickly little things.

Do you feel safe to let a girl-friend or a sister or any girl off the streets after the sun has set without a hint of fear? Do you not hear news about incidents where a girl has been raped or killed while walking alone? Forget the streets, such incidents tend to occur even in workplaces. So, where’s the happiness in the incoming year if the society isn’t at all safe for girls?

The case about politicians is one which is the most curious of all. It is an open secret that corruption exists within every political party. There are crores and crores of black money stashed in banks abroad and yet, a certain 40-something pothead, claiming to be a youth icon blabbers about the development in our country. The word development was already eradicated in the last decade by the previous government. The new one hopefully is working on it. I hope, with development comes great happiness.

Do you not see garbage dumped in the most unlikely of places, all here and there about the dustbins? Is cleanliness just a good virtual habit? Have you ever felt the shame at seeing your own countrymen throw out waste materials through the car window? And still, a very Happy New Year.

I could blabber on and on but it seems to be just a matter of a blog post. The negativity needs to cease. People must come forward with their actions rather than waiting for others. The whole society has to put away the old-stigma of being silent and become an active part. Only then, I suppose the New Year and all the successive New Years would be happier and also, merrier. Come on, be part of the change.

Let the change begin!

And then, a very Happy New Year!
