Confessions of a Manchester United fan!
6 years back, when a certain Cristiano Ronaldo was signed away
by Real Madrid from Manchester United, it was a setback for every Manchester
United fan. The situation was equivalent to an emotional heartbreak for all the
United fans worldwide. Yes, I almost cried at the news, literally.
The general
notion was that Manchester United would begin to crumble. And even though
Manchester United didn’t win the league the following season, the team
displayed the same fighting mindset and never-give-up spirit under the legendary Sir
Alex Ferguson. The attacking football, molded with Ferguson’s classy style of
play and team selection, added with an aura of belief by the fans along with
the festive mood at the Theatre of Dreams were a few highlights of the great Ferguson
era. The self-belief and the desire to win were kept alive by Sir Ferguson even
in those few, gullible additional minutes of any game. That was a magical
period within the great club of Manchester United. Ferguson always had a way,
always. When the 2011-12 season was lost at the very last minute of the very last
game of the season by a whisker to city rivals, Manchester City, the red half
of Manchester did not turn gloomy to the highest extent. As we say, Ferguson
always, and I repeat, always did have a way. The Barclays Premier League trophy
was won back the following season with just one single master stroke: the signing
of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. Ferguson was considered the Godfather. Such
was the benevolence and class of Ferguson. And such was his super-galactic
power. And such were the glorious days. And then, Ferguson retired in May,
2013. Period.
Fast forward to December, 2015. After more than two years and
one manager later, with Louis Van Gaal at the helm of affairs at United, the
glory days seem like a distant memory. The style of play United display now is
more of a pessimist. United no longer play to win. Van Gaal pointed out: “We
aren’t ready to win the Champions League yet.” With such negative views from
the manager of a great club like Manchester United, it seems the inevitable is
not too far. A manager, who doesn’t even motivate his players from the
touchline, even at times of desperation is a man out of ideas. There is a way
of playing at United. The so-called philosophy of Van Gaal is a useless one and
fluke. United are being destroyed, shattered. It has increasingly become a pain
watching Manchester United play. This is not exactly intolerance. This is the
horror of watching a seriously long and boring 18 month-old show called Louis
Van Gaal. He was great at managing the Dutch national team but no, certainly
not at Manchester United. Van Gaal may be a great manager but it is certain,
his magic is not working at Manchester United. It is only a matter of time when
the sack finally comes. Managers come and managers go, but the fans stay
forever. Old Trafford needs a new one. The Special One would do, definitely.
